Hank Aaron Division Review

Filed under: Articles, Scouting Reports — ervick @ 8:03 pm

HANK AARON DIVISION

bostonbraves4253.gif

The Boston Braves are owned by Leon Workin and Dale Messmer and have over 15M to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Pitching
1. John Lackey
2. Paul Maholm
3. Sean Marshall/Kyle Lohse
4. Bartolo Colon/Rick Vanden Hurk/Dan Hudson
5. Todd Wellemeyer

Needs: Two starters because reports are that Lackey will go to Santurce in exchange of 3 very good prospects.

Relievers
1. Jose Valverde
2. George Sherrill
3. James McDonald
4. Leo Rosales
5. Chris Smith
6. Logan Kensing

Needs: Very strong relievers, maybe need 1 to have all innings needed.

Catchers
None

Need: A starting catcher and backup.

Infield
1b- Ryan Garko/Jason Giambi
2b- Brendan Ryan
3b- David Wright
SS- Ryan Theriot

Needs: a utility that plays all positions

Outfielders
LF - Fernando Tatis
CF - Denard Span
RF - Shin-Soo Choo
OF - Brett Carroll

Needs: 2 Ofers

Final Assessment

The Braves still need to work on some positions to be able to compete in the Ruth Divison. They are very strong in the bullpen but rotation needs the development on some young starters and a comeback from Shaun Marcum (acquire in the Lackey trade). If Marcum is able to pitch the way he did before the injury (and all indications are that he is healthy) is going to be of big help with Maholm to top a rotation of young starters with a great bullpen. Boston needs to acquire 2 catchers, and a utility. They also acquire Sean Rodriguez, a player with the potential of hitting 30 homers in a season. In the Outfield, they need 2 outfielders, 1 of the spot could be for Todd Frazier who could play LF for a couple of years before moving to 3b for good.

992.gif

The Washington Senators are owned by Mark Lentz and has around 30 millions to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Josh Beckett
2. Kevin Millwood
3. Erik Bedard/JD Martin
4. Trevor Cahill
5. Chris Tillman/Jordan Zimmerman/Oliver Perez

Needs: None. Imagine that rotation without injuries, plus Jeff Francis. Mark had bad luck with injuries but has a very good rotation for the future.

Relievers
1. Huston Street
2. Darren O’Day
3. Todd Coffey
4. Mitch Stetter
5. Kyhle McClellan
6. Brian Brunney
7. Wesley Wright
8. Clay Zavada
9. Wesley Wright

Needs: None. Has quality and quantity.

Catchers
1. Mike Napoli
2. Chris Iannetta

Need: None

Infield
1b- Joey Votto/Randy Ruiz
2b- Chris Coghlan
3b- Jack Hannahan
SS- Asdrubal Cabrera
Utility- Julio Lugo

Needs: A 3b if Mark uses Cohlan at 2b.

Outfield
LF - Adam Lind
CF - Mike Cameron/Dexter Fowler
RF - Chase Headley/Jack Cust

Needs: None

Final Assessment

Mark does not has many needs, a 3b and has the money to go after a big name Free Agent at this position. He could also use more defense in the outfield corners and at 2b, but Coghlan bat is too good to sit him for his defense.

2433.gif

The Kalamazoo Kings are owned by Dan Doherty and have almost 20M to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Wandy Rodriguez
2. Joel Pineiro
3. Ryan Dempster
4. Matt Palmer

Needs: 2 starters

Relievers
1. Lance Cormier
2. Willie Eyre

Needs: A closer and at least 5 more relievers in the bullpen.

Catcher
1. Brian Schneider
2. Miguel Olivo

Needs: None

Infield
1b- Billy Butler/Travis Hafner
2b- Aaron Miles
3b- Joe Dillon
SS- None

Needs: 2b, 3b and SS

Outfield
LF - Cody Ross
CF - Aaron Rowand
RF - Travis Buck

Needs: Needs a regular right fielder and 2 more OFers.

Final Assesment

The Kings have a lot of needs and not much money. They need 2 starters, a lot of relievers, a 2b, 3b and SS and a regular right fielder. With not much money in comparison with other teams, maybe Dan should be thinking on rebuilding.

gnwt0hed28jk33qkw7mi.gif

The Nippon Ham Fighters are owned by Andy McCue and has almost 14 millions to spend on free agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Adam Wainwright
2. Joe Saunders
3. Ervin Santana/Shairon Martis
4. Mitchell Boggs/Gio Gonzalez
5. Micah Owings/Dustin Nippert

Needs: None

Relievers
1. Kerry Wood
2. Alfredo Aceves
3. Jesse Chavez
4. Blaine Boyer
5. Jose Veras
6. Zach Segovia
7. Matt Belisle

Needs: Maybe another reliever, not a must.

Catcher
1. Yadier Molina
2. Taylor Teagarden

Needs: None

Infield
1b- Connor Jackson
2b- None
3b- Adrian Beltre
SS- Erick Aybar

Needs: 2b, at bats at 1b and a utility

Outfielders
LF-Alfonso Soriano
CF-Jody Gertu and Rick Ankiel
RF-Bobby Abreu

Needs: Comeback year from Ankiel and another Outfielder.

Final Assesment

Andy does not have many needs. His needs is a second basemen only. He could try and improve on other positions but are not in major needs if his plan is for the future, if the Ham Fighters want to battle for the playoffs, then improvement on the bullpen, 1b and cf are needed.

quakes.gif

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are owned by Rob McQuown and Brian Joseph and have over 22 millions to spend.

Starting Rotation
1. Tim Lincecum
2. Rich Harden
3. Josh Outman/Mark Hendrickson
4. David Hernandez
5. Brian Tallet/Ryan Sadowski

Needs: 2 or 3 starters. With Josh OUtman he has a number 3 starter for the future, but knowing Rob, he wants to win NOW.

Relievers
1. Hong-Chih Kuo
2. Chirs Sampson
3. Esmerling VAsquez
4. Chris Naverson
5. Joe Nelson
6. Luis Ayala
7. Ramon Ramirez

Needs: A closer. I believe the Quakes have some good arms, but i believe they need a dependable 8th inning guy to go with Kuo. Rob was counting on Nelson to be his 7th inning guy but struggled last year and Sampson is always injured.

Catcher
1. Joe Mauer

Needs: Backup catcher.

Infield

1b- Russell Branyan
2b- Dustin Pedroia
3b- None
SS- Hanley Ramirez

Needs: 3b and utility.

Outfielders
LF- Ryan Ludwick
CF- Carlos Beltran/Jayson Werth
RF- Vladimir Guerrero
OF- Rocco Baldelli

Needs: None

Final Assessment

The Quakes made the biggest trade of the year, maybe of history at USBL acquiring Tim Lincecum and giving a lot of prospects and talent. With that move Rob needs to continue making moves to improve his team and compete this year. For that to happen Rancho Cucamonga needs improvement in the rotation and bullpen and a third basemen. Other holes are easy to fill with minor leaguers. So, with 22 million dollars, will Rob be able to get 3 starters, a closer, an 8th inning pitcher and a 3b? Maybe but i know he is working the phones as we speak trying to improve his team.

Josh Gibson Division Review

Filed under: Articles, Scouting Reports — ervick @ 4:34 pm

The Hitting League has the champions of the USBL in the Joshua Gibson Divison.

JOSH GIBSON DIVISION

empire.jpg

The Albany Empire are owned by Craig Goettsche and Dave Tolley and have almost $78M to spend on Free Agency.

Needs: None, great pitching rotation.

Relievers
1. Mariano Rivera
2. Brandon Lyons
3. J.P Howell
4. Leo Nunez
5. Phil Coke
6. James Johnson
7. Blake Hawksworth
8. Matt Capp

Needs: None, excellent bullpen

Catchers
1. Dioner Navarro
2. George Kottaras

Need: Improvement at C.

Infield
1b- Aubry Huff/Josh Whitesell
2b- Kelly Johnson
3b- Evan Longoria
SS- Stephen Drew/Alcides Escobar

Needs: 2b, improvement at 1b (Huff is signed until 2011) and a utility

Outfielders
LF- Manny Ramirez
CF- BJ Upton
RF- Jason Kubel
OF- Jacoby Ellsbury
OF- Julio Borbon
OF- Jeremy Hermita
OF- Clete Thomas
OF- Felix Pie

Needs: None

Final Assessment

Albany has a terrific team, and not many needs. Only major need is at 2b (Brian Roberts or Brandon Phillips going to the Champions?). They could sign Pujols and make other teams feel like they are the Yankees of the USBL, they have the money to do it. With so much money to spend, they could go Roberts at 2b, Bengie Molina catching until Carlos Santana is ready and Pujols at 1b.

100px-bataviamuckdogs.PNG

The Batavia Muckdogs are owned by Ed Taylor and has around 13.5 millions to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Doug Davis
2. Jason Hammel
3. Mark Rzepczynski/Braden Looper
4. Fausto Carmona
5. Yorman Bazardo/Carlos Silva

Needs: 2 starters

Relievers
1. Heath Bell
2. Pedro Feliciano
3. Brandon Medders
4. Dannyray Herrera
5. Cla Meredith
6. Tony Sipp
7. Braad Kilby
8. Kyle Kendrick
9. Jeff Bennett

Needs: Maybe one reliever to pitch the 8th inning.

Catchers
1. Miguel Montero
2. Dave Ross

Need: None

Infield
1b- Garrett Atkins
2b- Anderson Hernandez
3b- Jeff Keppinger
SS- Yunesky Betancourt

Needs: Utility and a player that can play 1b and 3b

Outfield
LF- Ryan Braun
CF- Willy Taveras/Mitch Maier
RF- Andrew Jones/Chris Duncan/Luis Montanez

Needs: Improvement at RF

Final Assessment
Batavia needs to improve on his pitching staff acquiring an ACE and a comeback year from Fausto Carmona. They need a reliever to pitch the 8th inning, a 1B and move Atkins to 3B and hope for a comeback year from him. Ed may be thinking on looking for a 2B just in case Anderson does not cut it as a major league starter in the majors. Also, needs a RF. Not much money to spend, so he will need to spend it wisely.

100px-auburndoubledays.png

The Auburn Doubleday are owned by Stephan Lockney and have almost 60M to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. David Price
2. Kevin Hart/Josh Greer
3. Jeremy Sowers/JoJo Reyes

Needs: 3 starters

Relievers
1. Phillip Hughes
2. Daniel Bard
3. Tim Wood

Needs: A closer and 3 more relievers in the bullpen.

Catcher
Starter, none, backup, Jason Larue and Mike Rivera

Needs: Starting Catcher

Infield
1b- Hank Blalock/Jim Thome
2b- Eugenio Velez
3b- Mark Reynolds
SS- Alexei Ramirez
Utility- Alex Gonzalez

Needs: Second basemen

Outfield
LF - Eric Byrnes/Matt Murton/Ross Gload
CF - Alfredo Amezaga
RF - Hunter Pence

Needs: A CF and improvement at LF

Final Assessment
Auburn is in a major rebuilding. Needs 3 starters, 4 relievers, a starting catcher, a second basemen and a centerfielder. Stephan has a lot of money to spend in Free Agency but to get so much quality at those position may be hard in a division were you have Albany that looks very strong.

indianapolisclowns.gif

The Indianapolis Clowns are owned by John Skillings and has over $50M to spend on free agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Jamie Moyer
2. Kevin Slowley
3. Mike Pelfrey
4. Matt Latos
5. Justin Lehr/Anthony Swarzak

Needs: One starter. Very good young pitchers, only need 1 starter to compete and let the young starters develop.

Relievers
1. Chad Qualls
2. Jose Mijares
3. Neftali Feliz
4. Ramon Troncoso
5. Manny DelCarmen
6. Joel Hanrahan
7. Jensen Lewis
8. Rich Thompson

Needs: None

Catcher
1. Victor Martinez
2. Dusty Ryan
3. Louis Marson

Needs: None

Infield
1b- Prince Fielder
2b- Jed Lowrie
3b- Mark Teahen
SS- Derek Jeter

Utility-Paul Janish

Needs: 2B

Outfielders
LF-Fred Lewis/Alex Romero
CF-Andrew McCutchen/Brian Anderson
RF- None

Needs: A RF and improvement at LF.

Final Assessment
The Clowns are an interesting team, they have some needs but a lot of young talente, especially in the rotation. They also have some veterans like Derek Jeter. John has around 50 millions to spend and does not need a lot of players to be competitive, a starting pitcher, a 2b and 2 Outfielders. With the amount of money he has, he can easily acquire those 3 pieces to compete in 2010, but the question remains, will he spend to compete or allow the young pitching staff to develop.

altoonacurve.gif

The Altoona Curve are owned by Bernie Sheehe and have over 79 millions to spend.

Starting Rotation
1. Chris Carpenter
2. Jair Jurrjens
3. David Bush/Brett Cecil
4. Brandon Marrow

Needs: 2 starters, and a big question mark, will Marrow stay in the rotation or will he go to the bullpen. The injury by Chen Ming Wang is a big blow, imagine this team with top 3 pitchers of Carpenter, Jurrjens and Wang. Also need a comeback from the always dependable Davis Bush.

Relievers
1. Jonathan Papelbon
2. Jeremy Affeldt
3. Brandon League
4. Edward Mujica
5. Chris Perez
6. Scott Downs
7. Matt Albers

Needs: None. Funny to see Marrow and League in same team.

Catcher
1. Ryan Doumit
2. Nick Hundley

Needs: third catcher.

Infield
1b- None
2b- Marco Scutaro
3b- Ian Stewart/Joshua Fields
SS- Rafael Furcal
Utility- Ramon Santiago, Reid Brignac

Needs: 1b (reports say PUjols was looking at real estate in Altoona).

Outfielders
LF- Skip Schumaker/Ben Francisco
CF-Shane Victorino
RF- Luke Scott/Justin UJpton
OF- Ryan Freel

Needs: None, unless Scott goes to play 1b and instead of going for Pujols they decide and go after an OFer.

Final Assessment

Altoona is another interesting team in a very tough division. Bernie only needs 2 starters and a 1B. He has the money to go after PUjols and at least one quality starter to go with Carpenter and Jurrjen, will he do that? With 79 millions to spend, should Albany feel the pressure this upcoming year?

Babe Ruth Division Review

Filed under: Articles, Scouting Reports — ervick @ 4:08 pm

We are going to start the Hitting League with the Ruth Division

BABE RUTH DIVISION

loon.jpg

The Great Lakes Loons are owned by Don Ervick and have over $48M to spend in Free Agency.

Starting Pitching
1. Johan Santana
2. Clayton Kershaw
3. Nick Blackburn
4. Scott Kazmir
5. Johnny Cueto/Doug Fister/Felipe Paulino

Needs 1 starter

Relievers
1. Joe Nathan
2. Matt Guerrier
3. Tony Pena
4. Renyel Pinto
5. Eric O’Flaherty
6. Dan Meyer

Needs None, but could go after 1 right handed reliever, but not a major need.

Catchers
1. Jason Varitek

Need Backup catcher

Infield
1b- James Loney
2b- Luis CAstillo
3b- Pablo Sandoval
SS- Khalil Greene

The infield depth consist of Mike Fontenont, Nomar Garciaparra and Khalil Greene if a SS is signed.

Needs SS

Outfielders
LF-Josh Hamilton
cf-Curtis Granderson
rf- Nick Markakis
OF- Sam Fuld

Needs Two more outfielders

Final Assessment
A lot of money to spend, and not many needs. ONe starter, a backup catcher, maybe improvement over Varitek, big need is a shortstop and a right handed hitter in the Outfield. With the 48 million dollars he has to spend, it should be easy to achieve these needs through Free Agency.

vbvacation.png

The Vero Beach Vacation are owned by Russ Lemmon and has around 7 million to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Jason Marquis
2. Brian Bannister
3. Livan Hernandez
4. Tim Redding/Jon Niese
5. Matt Harrison/Zach Miner

Needs 1 starter

Relievers
1. Dave Weathers
2. Mike Adamas
3. Jesse Carlson
4. Kyle Fansworth
5. Adam Russell
6. Josh Roenicke

Needs
One or two relievers. It would be great to get a closer, but with only 7 millions in the bank is going to be difficult.

Catchers
1. Jason Kendall
2. Robinzon Diaz

Need None

Infield
1b- Chad Tracy/Jose Lopez
2b- Craig Counsell
3b- Pedro Feliz
SS-Emilio Bonifacio

Utility Emanuel Burriss and Willie Blomquist whose going to play everywhere, including the outfield if needed.

Needs
Defensive improvement at SS

Outfield
LF- Carlos Guillen/Travis Snider
cf- Kosuke Fukudome/Coco Crisp
RF- Jason BAy
OF- Nate Schierholtz
OF-Austin Kearns

Final Assesment
The Vacation need to improve in the quality in some areas, but with only 7 million dollars to spend, they should try and get 1 starter and some relievers. Other positions he will be able to complete the year with what they have and next year they lose some bad contracts and be able to put a better team out there.

index.jpeg

The San Francisco Giants are owned by Jim Connell and have over $28M to spend on Free Agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Felix Hernandez
2. Chris Young/Charlie Morton
3. Ross Detwiler/Armando Galarraga
4. Brad Thompson

Needs 2 starters

Relievers
1. Brian Wilson
2. Chan Ho Park
3. Shawn Camp
4. Ryan Perry
5. Pat Misch
6. Daniel Schlereth
7. Randy Messenger
8. Freddy Dolsi
9. Christian Martinez
10. Tyler Yates

Needs Jim has quantity but needs to improve on quality here. AFter Wilson and CAmp, SAn Francisco could struggle in the bullpen.

Catcher
Starter, none, backup, Coste.

Needs Starting Catcher

Infield

1b-Mike Jacobs/Doug Mientkiewicz/Andy Marte
2b- Aaron Hill
3b- Mike Lowell
SS- Jimmy Rollins
Utility- Jacob Fox and Ryan Roberts

Needs Improvement at 1b.

Outfield

LF-Lastings Milledge
Cf-Juan Pierre
Rf-Ryan Sweeney

Needs Improvement at left field and 3 more outfielders.

Final Assessment
After Felix Hernandez and Charlie Morton SAn Francisco will need help in the starting rotation. The injury to Chris Young was devastating to this ballclub. For next year they will need 2 starters, 2 quality relievers, a starting catcher, improvement at 1b and 2 more outfielders. With 28 millions is going to be difficult to get all this assets so maybe another trade like the one involving Mike Lowell and Ryan Sweeney is going to be needed.

slb.gif

The St. Louis Browns are owned by Jeff Behrens and has over 41 millions to spend on free agency.

Starting Rotation
1. Jon Lester
2. Jame Happ
3. Ricky Romero
4. Max Scherzer
5. Ian Snell/Vincent Mazzaro
6. Jeff Suppan
7. Wade Leblanc
8. Luke Hochevar

Needs None

Relievers

1. David Aardsma
2. Brad Ziegler
3. Bobby Seay
4. Jeff Gray

Needs 3 relievers or use some of the starters to relieve.

Catcher

1. Matt Wieters
2. John Baker
3. Eliezer Alfonoso

Needs None

Infield
1b- Jorge Cantu
2b- Ben Zobrist
3b- None
SS- Everth Cabrera

Utility-Alexi Cassilla

Needs 3B and another utility that plays SS

Outfielders

LF-David Murphy
CF-Trever Crowe
RF- Jeff Francouer

Needs CF and a corner outfielder.

Final Assessment
The Browns have a lot of money to spend, they need relievers, a 3b and a centerfielder. Is going to be easy for Jeff to get those players with all the money they have to spend.

brooklyndodgersb.gif

The Brooklyn Dodgers are owned by Mike Kuduk and have over 99 millions to spend. Wow, he can buy another team with that, lol.Is going to be very difficult to outbid Mike for any Free Agent.

Starting Rotation
1. Zach Duke
2. John Lannan
3. Craig Stammen
4. Matt Daley

Needs 3 starters, including an ACE.

Relievers
1. Hideki Okajima
2. Joe Thatcher
3. Matt Daley
4. Alberto Arias
5. Doug Mathis
6. Juan Cruz
7. Juan Rincon

Needs A closer, right handed pitcher. An 8th inning guy, right handed. And probably another reliever, total, 3.

Catcher

Starters, none.
backups, Jason Jaramillo and Alex Avila.

Needs Starting catcher.

Infield
1b- Chris Shelton
2b- Freddy Sanchez
3b- Wes Helms/Juan Francisco
SS- Brendan Harris

Needs 1b, 3b and utility.

Outfielders
LF- Matt Holliday
CF-Alex Rios
RF-Andre Ethier
OF- Marcus Thames

Needs A fifth outfielder, able to play centerfield.

Final Assessment
The Dodgers have a lot of money to spend, and they will need to use it because they have many needs. They need 3 starters including an Ace, a closer, a starting catcher (in the division 2 teams need a starting catcher), a first basemen (they have the money to go after Albert PUjols) and third basemen and a good utility to play SS and 2b. The money is there and Brooklyn is going to be one of the most involved teams in Free Agency.

Dale is banking on someone giving up the draft pick to sign Brian Roberts, he needs that $5 million and maybe much more to sign starters. This will be the team that annoys the rest of us by driving up the price for the one or two guys the rest of us need. He has the batting talent and most all of his AB?????s (including McGehee as a trading chip unless he wants to move A-Rod’s salary), but this pitching staff is very weak.

There’s not a lot of cash here for Jason to work with, since Saito and Matsui, both with off years, are sucking up $28.6 million in payroll. Spare parts might be enough to man second base, but we could have a minor league casting call in the rotation this year. Unless he turns a few decent prospects into pitching, the misery in the rotation could be the perfect inspiration for a new country song out of Nashville.

Michael might be able to pull one over on the rest of the division if he can be shrewd with the free agent dollar. Catching is going to be an expensive commodity, but he doesn’t have to spend the kind of money on pitching that the rest of the league will be going after. Spending $12 million on two arbitration relievers will be a major step backwards if he gets stuck with both, but he could certainly stand to keep Ordonez. Even so, he would still have four full time positions to fill.

Although he has plenty of bodies, the 82 win shares in pitching are a little deceptive as 37 points are Verlander and Broxton. Bodies and innings count in this league though, and on the off-chance he is able to retain Hoffman in arbitration, the second closer would be a huge bargaining chip. And speaking of which, I didn’t even mention Dukes and Young in the outfield, and there is no telling where all Derosa will play. This team is solid and deep, unlike many others, and a good shortstop and a little more starting depth could take Jim to the top of a division that might not be all that strong this year.

Satchel Paige Divsion Review

Filed under: Articles, Scouting Reports — ervick @ 9:54 pm

After taking a look at the Cy Young Division, is time to review the needs of the Stachel Paige Division and attempt to identify Free Agency needs of the teams from it. Once we’ve looked at possible FA acquisitions.

SATCHELL PAIGE DIVISION

newark.gif
The Newark Eagles, managed by Howard Brover has almost $25M to spend on Free Agency acquisitions. A quick overview of his team finds that he needs few players to complete his roster.

Starting Rotation
C.C. Sabathia
Dan Haren
Rich Porello
Homer Bailey/John Maine
Holland and Jason Berken

As you can see, the Eagles don’t need help here. They have a talented group of young pitching in the rotation.

Bullpen
Ryan Franklin
Joaquim Soria
Bobby Howry
Matt Thornton
Sean Green
Josh Banks

Needs: Here the Eagles have a lot of quality arms, including two stoppers, one will pitch the eight. They could improve through free agency with a 7th inning guy but beside that, they are set here.

Catching
Carlos Ruiz

Needs: Back up catcher

Infield
The Eagles appear to have all the bases covered except 2B. At first base, Miguel Cabrera and Matt Kotsay, at second base Jeff Baker and Jeff Inglett, third base Amaris Ramirez and Matt Gamel and at SS Maicer Izturis and Tyler Greene.

Needs: 2B and utility

Outfield
The Eagles have three quality starting outfielders in Vernon Wells, Adam Jones and JD Drew and a very good fourth outfielder in Will Venable.
Needs: While the Eagles don’t have any major needs, the team could probably use a fifth outfielder here.

Final Assessment

The Eagles only needs are a second basemen, a good backup catcher, one utility and a fifth outfielder. Maybe, if money is available a reliever with the talent to pitch in the 7th inning.

rebirds.gif
The Memphis Redbirds, managed by Chris Feeney have around $88M and be able to spend around 50M of that money.

Starting Rotation
Usbaldo Jimenez
Jered Weaver
Derek Lowe
Randy Wells
Jeremy Guthrie

Needs: No needs. This is another solid rotation in this division and don’t need a FA here.

Bullpen
Brad Lidge
Fernando Rodney
Dan Wheeler
Jeff Samardzlja
Nick Massett
Ron Mahay, Scott Eyre and Jerry Blevins

Needs: No needs, eventough a quality closers could help. Redbirds have two closers but is more quantity over quality here. Now, from the 8th inning down they are well covered.

Catching
Jeff Mathis
Henry Blanco
Kelly Shoppach
Bryan Pena

Needs: Memphis has a lot of catchers, probably should trade one of them to free some cap space to be able to sign a big name SS in the offseason.

Infield
The infield is first baseman, 2B Howie Kendrick, 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff and at the moment has no SS able to play in the majors.

Needs: SS and a quality utility

Outfield
The outfield is in good shape at left field with one of the best, if not the best in the game, Carl Crawford, but after him, Memphis is very weak with Chris Young at centerfielder and no right fielder for the moment. The Redbirds will have Eric Patterson as their fifth outfielder.

Needs: Improvement at centerfield, a right fielder and a fourth outfielder.

Final Assessment
The big need for the Redbirds is a SS, a right fielder and improvement at centerfield. If they acquire a new centerfielder Chris Young becomes the 4th outfielder with Patterson being number 5. A big name closer would be welcome by the rotation unless Lidge and/or Rodney can make a comeback from bad years. Finally, a quality infielder could be of big use for Memphis.

wbrgif.gif
Wilmington Blue Rocks, managed by Scott Silberfein have around 35M to spend on FA.

Starting Rotation
Cliff Lee
Javier Vazquez
Scott Feldman
Scott Baker
Tommy Hunter/Colin Balester

Needs: The names are there, but Scott Olsen and Manny Parra struggled last year and leaves the rotation in need of an upgrade. A 5th starter for now, because for the future they are set.

Bullpen
Brian Stokes
Bob Keppel
Kris Medlen
Dustin Richardson
Travis Schlichting
Doug Slaten

Needs: A lot. Wilmington needs a big time closer, a set up reliever, a pitcher able to pitch the 7th inning, a good left handed reliever and a long inning guy.

Catching
Josh Thole

Needs: A regular catcher and his backup.

Infield
The Blue Rocks infield has Chris Davis and Garret Jones will be playing 1b, Dan Uggla playing second with Jason Bartlett playing SS. At third base they have Gordon Beckham and Alex Gordon.

Needs: A right handed first basemen to platoon with Davis in case Wilmington is thinking about using Jones in the outfield, and a utility infielder.

Outfield

Wilmington needs a center fielder, he is well covered in the corners with Milton Bradley and Jones playing left field and Nick Swisher and Nelson Cruz playing right field.

Needs: A centerfielder.

Final Assessment
The Blue Rocks need a lot of help in the bullpen, 2 catchers, a centerfielder and maybe a first basemen. They have a lot of money but many expensive holes to fill.

jacksonvillesuns03a.gif
The Jacksonville Suns are owned by Mike Horvath and has around 18.5M to spend in the upcoming FA period.

Starting Rotation

Jeff Niemann
Chad Billingsley
David Huff/Bobby Parnell

Needs: The injury by Mark Mulder is hurting Jacksonville big time. They have 3 good young starters, they will need 2 more to be competitive in this pitching oriented division, probably a quality number 3 and a number 5 starters.

Bullpen

Michael Wuertz
Evan Meeks
Justin Speier

Needs: Like the Blue Rocks, the Suns need a lot of help in the bullpen. They need a closer (Meeks could be the closer of the future) and a lot of quantity and quality arms, including one lefty. Wuertz and Meeks can hold the 8th, but other innings need big time help.

Catching
Koyie Hill
Kenji Johjima
Jose Morales

Needs: None. The Suns have quantity, lacks quality in this position, but they don?????t have enough money to cover all their needs plus catching.

Infield
In the infield, the team has Derek Lee covering 1st base, Josh Barfield doing duty at second, Ty Wigginton and Mike Lamb platooning at third and Matt Tolbert covering shortstop. Super utility man Willy Aybar playing all positions except SS.

Needs: With the exception of first base, the Suns need help everywhere else. They need a second basemen, at third base they lack defense and could use improvement there, they need a full time SS and use Tolbert as the utility able to play the position.

Outfield
The Suns have a very good centerfielder in Michael Bourn, a very good hitting right fielder in Brad Hawpe and a combination of Gary Sheffield, Ryan Church and Cory Sullivan to play left field and some right field.
Needs: They could use a right handed outfielder.

Final Assessment
Jacksonville has many needs and few money to spend so they need to spend wisely. The Suns need 2 starters, a closer and 3 or 4 relievers, a second and SS. They could use a better third basemen, but I don’t believe they have the money to spend. They could also use a right handed hitter in the outfield, but again, will they have the money to acquire all this players?

yankees.gif
The New York Yankees are owned by Dennis Glade, and has around 33M dollars to spend on FA.

Starting Rotation
John Danks
Javier Vazquez
Scott Baker
Scott Feldman
Tommy Hunter/Colin Balester

Needs. None. Top 4 starters are strong, and the fifth is able to do the job. Money is going to be needed for the relievers as we are going to see later on.

Bullpen
David Robertson
Seth McClung
Matt Belisle
Scott Shields
Jeff Karstens

Needs: a closer, a 7th inning reliever, a lefty and one more reliever.

Catching
AJ Pierrzynski
Chris Snyder
Rob Johnson

Needs: None

Infield
The infield, 1b is Justin Morneau, 2b Robinson Cano, 3b Michael Young and Mike Lowell and SS rookie Elvis Andrus and Ian Desmond. As utilities the Yankees have Robert Andino and Delwyn Young who can also play in the outfield.

Needs: None, very solid infield.

Outfield
Torii Hunter
Colby Rasmus
Ryan Sweeney
Anthony Gwynn
Wladimir Balentien
Drew Stubbs
Michael Saunders

Needs: A lot of good young outfielders, could use a right handed bat playing lf.

Final Assessment
The New York Yankees have 33 millions, and like many teams, still needs a closer, a 7th inning reliever, 1 left handed reliever, another help from the bullpen and 1 right handed hitter outfielder with power.

USBL World Series 2009

Filed under: Articles, League News — Administrator @ 5:00 pm

Summary: In a stunning upset, the Albany Empire not only wins the World Series against the powerhouse Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, but does it in 4 straight games. Rancho leads in every game, but Albany’s hitting comes alive at just the right times, and Empire pitching holds the Quakes’ ‘Murders Row’ offense (regular season Team OPS: .890) in check just long enough to eke out 2 one run wins (1 in extra innings), and prevail in another close game, after shaking up the mighty Quakes with a blow out win in game 1.

Analysis of the Upset:

Broadly, the Empire gets surprising results from Ballpark Home Runs (BP) (2 out of 3 on 20% (1-4 out of 20) or 25% (1-5 out of 20) chances, with all of the HR in close games), produces an Onbase Plus Slugging percentage (OPS) of .935 vs. right handed pitchers (only .572 vs. LHP), and allows no inherited runners to score. Rancho suffers from disappointing results in BP (1 of 7, with the 1 HR in blow out game 1), errors (4, with 2 critical errors determining game 3), Clutch (3 Clutch outs, none of them in blowout game 1) and pinch hits (0 for 10).

World Series MVP Aubrey Huff leads Albany with 2 HR, 4 Runs Batted In (RBI) and 8 runs, in addition to an eye popping 1.623 OPS. He is more than supported by Jason Kubel (2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 runs, 1.133 OPS) and American League Championship Series (ALCS) MVP B.J. Upton (.474 On Base Percentage (OBP), 2 runs, 4 RBI). The Albany pen is again stellar, with James Johnson, Matt Capps, John Grabow, Rafael Perez, Mariano Rivera and Billy Sadler throwing 16 scoreless Innings Pitched (IP), allowing only 7 hits, 1 walk and striking out (K) 19.

The Quakes’ offense is lead by Jay Bruce (.461 Batting Average (BA), 5 RBI), Hanley Ramirez (.369 BA, .632 Slug, 2 Stolen Bases) and Adam Dunn (OPS 1.084, 1 HR, 3 RBI), but disappointed Rancho manager Rob McQuown is not able to point to any Quakes hitters beyond the 3 who met his expectations, as Rancho strands 36 runners to the Empire’s 23, and manages an OPS of only .731 for the Series. Rancho’s starting pitching does not last longer than 5.1 IP in any game, and averages only just more than 4 IP/GS. Hong-Chih Kuo leads the Quakes bullpen with 8 K in 6 IP, but other than Zambrano’s start (6 Ks, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 run in 5.1 IP) and Kuo, no Quakes pitcher has any consistent success against the Empire’s white hot bats.

Setting the Stage:

Rancho comes into the series well rested, losing only 1 game in the NLDS (3-0 sweep of Minnesota) and NLCS (4-1 over Casper) and fielding a team that topped the USBL in almost every offensive and pitching category (BA: .295, Runs: 1020, Home Runs: 248, BA Against: .218, ERA: 3.05, HR Allowed: 123), with an average win margin of 2.86 runs per game. Cucamonga garnered the 2 through 5 slots in USBL MVP voting, earned 3 1st team All-Stars and 4 2nd team All-Stars, and won 3 Gold Gloves. The Quakes are lead by veterans Chipper Jones (OBP: .481, Slug: .597, BA: .387), Carlos Beltran (127 Runs, 124 RBI, 29 HR, .926 OPS, CF Range 1), and Adam Dunn (49 HR, 123 BB, 125 Runs, 118 RBI, 1.023 OPS), with younger veterans Dustin Pedroia (115 Runs, 104 RBI, 21 HR, .314 BA, 2B Range 1), Joe Mauer (.420 OBP, -3 Arm, C Range 1), Ryan Ludwick (29 HR, .931 OPS)and young rising stars Hanley Ramirez (143 Runs, 99 RBI, 30 HR, .331 BA, .998 OPS) and Jay Bruce (31 HR, .541 Slug), and have no soft spots in their lineup. Their staff is anchored by undefeated ace Rich Harden, who went 19-0 during the regular season, with a Walks plus Hits per Inning (WHIP) of .97, holding opponents to a BA of .180 while striking out almost 12 batters/9 IP, and allowing only 14 HR in 188 IP. Carlos Zambrano (19-8, 1.17 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, only 8 HR in 237 IP, .199 Opp BA), Ben Sheets (18-6, 1.07 WHIP, 7.8 K/9, .229 Opp BA) and Cliff Sampson (10-2, .92 WHIP, 6 HR in 90 IP, .209 Opp BA) round out Rancho’s formidable rotation.

On the other hand, after sweeping the Indianapolis Clowns in the ALDS, Albany is not as well rested after rallying from down 2 games to none to come back and beat the Great Lakes Loons in the ALCS. It takes all 7 games and everything the Empire has. Albany does not have nearly the offensive arsenal (BA: .282, Runs: 891, Home Runs: 201, team OPS: .821) or pitching arms (BA Against: .233, ERA: 3.44, HR Allowed: 136, win margin: 1.72 runs), but are happy to have made it to the Series. Only Aubrey Huff (.970 OPS) and Manny Ramirez (.990 OPS) approach the hitting prowess of the Quakes. Albany frequently relied on a speed game during the season, but Mauer’s arm is expected to blunt B.J. Upton (.406 OPS, 55 SB) and Jacoby Ellsbury (58 SB) on the base paths. Although he went 24-3, Zach Greinke’s (1.09 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, .228 Opp BA) difficulties with left handed hitters are well known. Jake Peavy (18-2, 1.09 WHIP, 7.9 K/9, .219 Opp BA) provides a good number 2, but Albany is forced to reach deep to Gavin Floyd (14-11, 1.20 WHIP, 7.7 K/9, .235 Opp BA) as a number 3, due to a tired Dana Eveland from the ALCS, and can only count on emerging star Josh Johnson (6-3, 1.28 WHIP, 8.9 K/9, .262 Opp BA) for 1 GS in the series. ‘But anything can happen in a 7 game series’ says Manager Craig Goettsche, whose hot hand guided the Empire’s crucial wins in games 3 through 5 of the ALCS.

Game 1: at Rancho: Jake Peavy vs. Ben Sheets: Empire 11, Quakes 4:

Albany jumps on Sheets for 8 runs in the second, coasting to an easy win. Peavy lasts 6 and helps himself in the big second with a hit and a run to get the win before tiring and giving way to 3 innings of Billy Sadler’s 1 hit, no walk, 4 K relief. Jason Kubel (HR, 3 hits, 4 RBI) and Aubrey Huff (HR, double, 3 hits, 2 RBI) lead the Empire 14 hit parade.

Albany goes quietly in the first, and the home crowd buzzes as both sides of last off-season’s trade between Rancho and Albany face off. Quake fans roar as Hanley Ramirez smashes the first pitch from Jake Peavy for a lead off Home Run. Empire co-GM Dave Tolley phones Manager Craig Goettsche in the dug out: ‘Good trade, huh?’. But Peavy settles in, getting 2 easy tappers to the mound and a K, and Albany is only down by 1.

The Empire rules in the second, starting with singles by Manny Ramirez and Kelly Johnson, followed by a 3 run shot to dead center by Jason Kubel. Sheets get Evan Longoria on a routine grounder, but the wheels start to fall off with a single to opposing pitcher Peavy (Pitcher’s Card (P), Range (R) 3, Split (S) 3), single (P) to Stephen Drew and RBI single to B.J. Upton. Sheets gets Dioner Navarro to pop to 3rd for the second out, but Huff strokes a single (P) to drive in the 5th Albany run. After an intentional walk to Manny Ramirez to load the bases, Kelly Johnson drives in 2 more with another single (P), and Jason Kubel gets his second hit of the inning, a single (P) to drive in the 8th run of the inning, 4 off Sheets’ card with 2 outs. The Albany dugout is elated and Quakes fans can’t believe what they are seeing. Longoria taps his second weak grounder of the inning to end the rally, but Albany has a commanding 7 run lead.

Albany threatens again in the 3rd on a Drew single/Chipper Jones error and a walk to Upton, but Jones starts the double play on a hot grounder from Dioner Navarro to end the inning, and then gives Rancho some spark with a solo HR over the wall in right (BP 1-5, S 3). The Quakes threaten to score more on 2 walks and a line drive to center with 2 out by Ryan Ludwick, but Upton’s throw is in time to nip Adam Dunn at the plate.

Aubrey Huff gets the run right back for the Empire in the 4th on a solo Home Run (P) off of Darren Oliver. He connects again in the 6th, this time for a 1 out double after a lead off walk (P) to Upton, but Damaso Marte gets out of the 2nd and 3rd with 1 out jam with no damage. The Empire do get to Hong-Chih Kuo in the 7th on Kubel’s 3rd hit, a walk to Longoria, Peavy’s sacrifice, a sacrifice fly by Stephen Drew and a single by Upton (P, R 3, S 2), pushing Albany’s lead to 11-2.

Adam Dunn smashes a 2 run shot off of Peavy to start the 7th, but Billy Sadler comes on and holds the lid on tight, giving up only a single that is erased on a double play in the final 3 innings.

The Empire hold a muted celebration: they have managed a win, but tomorrow will bring Rich Harden, who has not lost a USBL game since 2008.

Game 2: At Rancho: Gavin Floyd vs. Rich Harden: Empire 7, Quakes 6:

In an exciting game marked by 5 lead changes, even the undefeated Harden cannot cool Albany?????s offense, and the Empire bullpen holds down the Quakes after a rocky start by Floyd. Dioner Navarro and Jason Kubel each hit 2 run Home Runs and B.J. Upton, Aubrey Huff and Manny Ramirez each get 2 hits. Jay Bruce drives in 3 runs and Carlos Beltran connects for a solo HR for the Quake, but it is not enough.

Albany gets a run with 2 outs in the 1st on a walk (P) to Huff, a Manny Ramirez double and a rare Passed Ball by Joe Mauer. The Quakes finally start to rumble in their half of the first. Hanley Ramirez manufactures a run by singling, stealing second, moving to 3rd on a fly ball to right and scoring on sacrifice fly by Adam Dunn. Rancho takes the lead when Kelly Johnson puts Carlos Beltran at 2nd on a 2 base error (P, R 3, S 7, Error) and Mauer brings him home on a single to left.

Harden and Floyd both roll through the second, but Albany breaks out again in the 3rd. B.J. Upton leads off with a double, and Dioner Navarro surprises everyone by smashing a Home Run to dead center. Huff doubles and moves to 3rd when Kelly Johnson singles (P, R 3, S 4) after a Manny strike out. Huff comes home on a wild pitch and Albany has another runner in scoring position (RISP) with only 1 out, but Harden gets Kubel on a grounder to 1st and Evan Longoria on a pop out to short (Clutch Out (ClOut)).

The Empire’s unexpected 2 run lead over Harden evaporates quickly in the bottom of the 3rd. Chipper Jones leads off with a single, Dunn walks, and now it’s the Quakes turn to produce with 2 outs. Ryan Ludwick walks (P) to load the bases, Jay Bruce drives the ball to center for a bases clearing double and the Quakes take back the lead.

Neither team scores in the 4th after Albany pulls Floyd for a pinchhitter, then squanders an RISP with 1 out, but the Empire go back ahead in the top of the 5th on a 2 out 2 run Home Run (BP 1-5, S 1) by Jason Kubel. In the bottom of the inning, Carlos Beltran ties it with a solo bomb (P). A Mauer single, 2 wild pitches from J.P. Howell and a Ryan Ludwick walk put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. Quakes stadium is rocking in anticipation!! But Howell manages to strike out Jay Bruce, James Johnson does the same to pinchhitter Rocco Baldelli, and then gets Dustin Pedroia on a pop up to short (ClOut). Albany escapes a big Quakes temblor to hold onto a tie.

In the 6th, Jacoby Ellsbury comes off the bench to single and steals second. With the go ahead run on second and 1 out, B.J. Upton delivers, lacing a double that drives in Ellsbury. Navarro and Huff strand Upton at second, but Albany has a lead and calls on the best of their bullpen.

Rafael Perez gets Rancho 1-2-3 in the 6th. Manny Ramirez singles and goes to second with 1 out on Kelly Johnson’s sacrifice, but this time Kubel and Blake DeWitt strand an RISP. Now Albany goes to setup man Matt Capps, who holds Rancho in the 7th. The Empire call on Mariano Rivera in the 8th, hoping he can go 2 scoreless innings, and he comes through, getting all 6 Quakes he faces to finish the 3 scoreless tense final innings in a 1 run game. Albany floats home with a 2-0 lead, but still expecting the Quakes to breakout.

Game 3: At Albany: Carlos Zambrano vs. Zack Greinke: Empire 3, Quakes 2 in 10 innings:

Down 0-2, the Quakes turn to 18 game winner Carlos Zambrano, hoping to get back within striking distance. The Empire goes with 24 game winner Zack Greinke, and the fans do get a pitcher’s duel, although neither starter makes it past the 6th. Jacoby Ellsbury comes off the bench again to spark the Albany offense and score a critical run, and the Empire bullpen wins the duel. The Quakes are devastated by 2 successive errors by backup right fielder Rocco Baldelli that hand the game back to the Empire, after the Quakes had taken a hard earned lead in the top of the 10th. But Baldelli would not have had the goat opportunity if the Quakes had not left 12 runners on base to the Empire’s 4. Empire fans finally begin to believe they can pull off the upset!!

The first inning passes quietly. Zambrano sets up the first Rancho threat in the second with a 2 out single (P) to put runners on 1st and 2nd. But Dustin Pedroia pops to short (ClOut) to end the inning.

Albany takes the early lead in their 2nd on a walk (P) to Aubrey Huff, an Evan Longoria double and a single (P) by Stephen Drew. But with runners on the corners and only 1 out, Zambrano gets Greinke and Dioner Navarro to fly out to snuff out the rally.

Rancho again puts runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out in the 3rd, but Greinke strikes out Carlos Beltran to hold onto the 1-0 lead.

Albany puts a runner on 3rd with 1 out in their 3rd on a triple by Kelly Johnson, but Zambrano strikes out Manny Ramirez and gets the dangerous Huff on a routine grounder to short. Neither team can get a runner past 1st in the 4th and 5th. The stadium crackles with the tension!!

Rancho rallies in the 6th to tie it up, but wastes another RISP opportunity. Adam Dunn leads off with a line drive that gets by Jason Kubel in right for a double (P, R 4, S 2). Hanley Ramirez follows with his own double to tie it up. Although Greinke has allowed only 1 run, Empire Manager Craig Goettsche has seen enough, and calls on Matt Capps early to control the damage. Capps responds by getting the next 3 hitters, leaving Hanley stranded at second. The Quakes threaten again off of Capps in the 7th. After a lead off strike out by pinchhitter Jeff Bailey, Dustin Pedroia laces a clean single and goes to 3rd on Joe Mauer’s single. Runners on the corners again with 1 out. But Capps comes through again, getting Chipper to foul out and Dunn to strike out, leaving 2 more Quakes runners on base. Albany continues to go quietly, and the home fans are restless, wondering how long the Empire can keep dodging bullets.

Albany goes to Mariano Rivera in the 8th, but the Quakes keep attacking, again putting runners at the corners with 1 out on Beltran’s triple and a walk to pinchhitter Cody Ransom. Rivera bears down and strikes out Ryan Ludwick, then gets Bailey to fly out to end another inning with 2 runners on base. The Empire again fail to get a runner on base in the top of the 9th. Chipper gets to second with 2 out on an Evan Longoria error (P, R 2, Split 4, Guarding Lines, Error), but stays there when pinchhitter Ryan Shealy taps out to short. Extra innings: the home crowd is abuzz, but the Empire haven’t had a runner in scoring position in 5 innings.

Rancho finally reaches home plate again in the 10th off reliever Phil Coke. Beltran smacks a double, and with 2 out, Ryan Ludwick breaks the RISP spell, hitting his own double to drive in Beltran. The home crowd is silent: the Quakes have finally erupted.

The Quakes go to Frank Francisco to close out the 10th and the game. Evan Longoria steps in and electrifies the crowd with a lead off gap double. Tying run on 2nd, nobody out. Francisco strikes out Stephen Drew. Jacoby Ellsbury makes his first plate appearance of the game, and keeps the crowd roaring with a single to right. They’re on their feet as Longoria rounds 3rd and heads home carrying the tying run. Rocco Baldelli winds up and heaves a throw wide of home that even Mauer can’t reach, allowing Longoria to score and Ellsbury to get to 3rd. Winning run on 3rd with 1 out. Dioner Navarro hits a fly ball to Baldelli, who sets up to make a running catch with momentum towards the plate to get Ellsbury tagging up. But Baldelli’s foot work gets tangled and he drops the ball for his second error of the inning!! (P, R 3, S 20, Error) The Empire fans go crazy as Ellsbury comes home from 3rd uncontested with the walk off winning run!! With a 3-0 lead, even the Empire skeptics are beginning to believe!!

Game 4: At Albany: Chris Sampson vs. Josh Johnson: Empire 7, Quakes 4:

Rancho jumps out to a 4-0 lead early, but the Quakes’ 4th starter Chris Sampson can’t hold back the surging Albany offense, led by home runs from Evan Longoria and Aubrey Huff, and once they are ahead, the Empire again go to their bullpen to hold the Quakes scoreless for the last 6 innings. But the key to the game is again the Quakes inability to drive in runners. Rancho leaves 9 on while scoring 4: Albany leaves 4 on while scoring 7.

The Quakes have no difficulty scoring in the 2nd. Cody Ransom (P) and Joe Mauer lead off with back to back walks. With 1 out, Dustin Pedroia keeps the rally alive with a single (P) up the middle. Josh Johnson walks (P) Chris Sampson with the bases loaded to give up the first run, one of 6 walks he gives up in only 4 wild innings. Bases still loaded, still only 1 out. Jay Bruce strokes a single (P) to right, knocking in 2 more runs. Manager Craig Goettsche considers pulling Johnson, but pitching coach Dave Tolley urges saving the tired Albany pen for a closer future game, so Johnsons is left in to ‘take one for the team’. He responds by stranding Bruce and Sampson, striking out Hanley Ramirez and getting Chipper Jones to pop to second (ClOut) to get out of the inning down only 3-0.

Rancho keeps rocking in the 3rd on a 1 out single (P) by Ransom, a walk to Mauer and single (P) by Carlos Beltran. Runners on the corners with one out. Albany sticks with Johnson, hoping to get a few more innings, and he rewards the Empire by getting Pedroia and Sampson. The Quakes have a 4-0 lead, but the 4 runners who did not score after being on base with 1 out will come back to haunt them.

Albany finally gets on the board with a brief 2 out rally in their 3rd. Stephen Drew raps a single (P, R 3, S 1) and B.J. Upton drives a double, scoring Drew. But Beltran hits the cut-off man and Upton is thrown out going to 3rd, snuffing out the rally.

The Quakes look to pour it on in the 4th. With one out, Hanley Ramirez drops a single just in front of the slow reacting Manny Ramirez (P, R 4, S 11) and steals second. Walks to Chipper Jones and Ryan Ludwick load the bases with 1 out. But Johnson gets through another 1 out jam with no damage, striking out Ransom and getting Beltran to fly to center. Three more 1 out runners left on base for the Quake!!

The Empire make it a game again in their 4th. Dioner Navarro leads off with a double (P) and Aubrey Huff follows with a double of his own. 4-2, and the Empire fans start to make some noise. 2 successive outs do not move Huff over from second. But Jason Kubel comes through with another double (P) and then Evan Longoria rocks the stadium by blasting a 2 run Home Run to take the lead!! Manager Craig orders the bullpen to warm up and pitching coach Dave is happy to concur.

After Rafael Perez retires the Quakes in order in the 5th, the Empire get an insurance run when Aubrey Huff lofts a fly to right that just gets over the wall (BP 1-4, S 2). Perez gives up a 1 out double to Hanley in the 6th, but strikes out Jones and Ludwick to strand another 1 out Rancho runner. Perez has done his job, striking out 4 in 2 innings, and holding the Quakes scoreless.

Albany goes situational with their bullpen: John Grabow comes in to get out Ransom and is immediately pulled for ‘reverse righty’ Billy Sadler, who gets Mauer and Beltran to end the 7th. J.P. Howell starts the 8th, getting Pedroia and pinchhitter Rocco Baldelli. But his control troubles continue, as he issues walks to pinchhitter Steve Holm (P) and Hanley Ramirez. After Jonny Gomes pinch runs for Holm, Albany pulls Howell (+6 hold) for Matt Capps (0 hold) to face Hanley Ramirez. With 2 outs and the tying run on 1st, Rancho Manager Rob McQuown calls for the double steal, hoping to put the tying run in scoring position. But Dioner Navarro pegs a perfect throw to nail Gomes at 3rd, leaving the bat in Ramirez hands.

Albany gets another insurance run in their 8th on a lead off Manny Ramirez double. Pinchrunner and defensive replacement Jacoby Ellsbury scores on a Longoria double and the Empire lead is 3 with only 3 outs to go.

The Empire call on Mariano Rivera for the 3rd time in 4 days. A grounder to Longoria (R 2, S 14), a strike out and a fly to center, and the Empire are USBL World Series champions for 2009!!

Cy Young Division Review

Filed under: Articles, Scouting Reports — ervick @ 5:07 pm

With the 2009 World Series behind us, the 2010 Ultimate Strat League Baseball (USBL) is in the early stages of the upcoming 2010 season and for some it looks to be a long one, while others the World Series 2010 can’t come soon enough.. As with every season, the waiver wire, Rule V draft and regular draft processes is a way teams will attempt to improve their respective teams for both the near future, mostly through Free Agency pickups and the long haul via the amateur draft.

This report will take a look at each team and attempt to identify Free Agency needs of the teams from the National League. Once we have looked at possible FA acquisitions, we will look at the draft and what it might mean to each team in the National League.

CY YOUNG DIVISION

BRS.gif

The Boston Red Sox, managed by Steve Michaud have almost $34M to spend on Free Agency acquisitions. A quick overview of his team finds that he needs around 7 to 8 players.

Starting Rotation
Braden
Penny

Needs:The Red Sox need a lot of help here. Braden could be a good number 2 starter in the rotation and Penny a solid number 3 or 4. He needs 3 starting pitchers (a #1 starter, and two other starters to fill in the rotation). With $34M to spend, it is possible that he could pick up a couple of starters improve his lackluster pitching staff. Having talked with him though, he indicated while he won’t commit to going after a #1 starter he wasn’t inclined not to either.

Bullpen
Sergio Romo
Justin Berg
Manuel Acosta
Jason Grilli
Santiago Casilla
Luke Gregerson
Kip Wells
R. A. Dickey
Jason Motte

Needs: The Red Sox have a lot of arms, but are in need of a left-handed reliever and a closer. The setup reliever could be Gergerson and the 7th inning guy, Sergio Romo. Motte could be the closer of the future, but at the moment, the Red Sox need to pick up a closer to improve their bullpen’s ability to save those tight games that they inevitably will have. Now, the question is, do they spend the big money on a #1 starter or a closer?

Catching
John Buck
Brad Ausmus

Needs: None

Infield
The Red Sox appear to have all the bases covered except 2B. Though they have indicated they would attempt to keep Clint Barmes with his 20+ homers and the general need for a second baseman they may have to spend some money to keep him. At first base, the over $10M price tag for Todd Helton would be okay if the team was in a position to compete, but as of this moment the Red Sox would be better served to trade away Helton and groom another player. Casey Black and youngster Yunel Escobar will play 3B and SS respectively and Jerry Hairston and Oscar Salazar round out the infield as solid utility players.

Needs: 2B

Outfield

The Red Sox have plenty of outfielders to field a pretty good offensive-minded outfield. It is expected that Luke Scott and Seth Smith will platoon in left, Scott Hairston will cover CF and Gabe Gross and Carlos Guillien will play in Right.

Needs: While the Red Sox’s don’t have any major needs, the team could probably use a right-handed power hitter and a backup centerfielder, with better defense.

Final Assessment
The Red Sox need 3 starters, a closer, 1 left-handed relief pitcher, a second baseman, a backup centerfielder (or someone better than Hairston) and a right-handed batter that is capable of playing RF and with decent power. Question is, will the GM spend any of that $34M in their coffers, trade or pickup Rule 5/Waiver wire pickups to fill some of these holes or will he wait and spend another year in the cellar?

OBT.gif

The Old Bridge Titans, managed by Pete Grassi have around $3.5M to spend on Free Agency acquisitions. He really only has two major needs, a first baseman and a centerfielder.

Starting Rotation
Tim Lincecum
Matt Cain
Cole Hamels
Bronson Arroyo

Needs: The solid rotation only requires a #5 starter. With this rotation they don’t need a big name FA.

Bullpen
Bobby Jenks
Matt Linstrom
Robinson Tejeda
Alan Embree
Scot Schoeneweis
Dan Giese
Masahide Kobayshi

Needs: Old Bridge has his closer and Tejeda should pitch the 8th, but Linstrom struggled and from the 7th inning down the relievers have quantity but not quality. With only $3M to spend, and in need of a 1b–I don’t see the Ghosts spending money here. Perhaps they can do a deal with the Red Sox!

Catching
With Russell Martin being the successful hitter/catcher that he is, the Ghosts are solid in this position even with Ronny Paulino as Martin’s backup.

Needs: None

Infield
Casper’s infield is in need of a first baseman; however, they do have 2B and 3B taken care of with Orlando Hudson, Omar Infante, Jhonny Peralta and SS Jose Reyes.

Needs: 1B and SS (due to Reyes’ injury)

Outfield
The outfield is in good shape with Carlos Quentin holding down leftfield, Jayson Werth in center and Vlad taken care of right field. Couple those players with Josh Anderson, Ken Griffey, Jason Michaels and oft-injured Reggie Willits they have the depth required to get through the season.

Needs: None

Final Assessment
The Old Bridge Titans have very little money in which to compete with other teams in FA which is always a high bidding affair; but, lacking a first basemen, a 5th starter, support at shortstop and better middle relief pitchers we might see the Ghosts make an off-season trade to acquire those missing components to help them make the playoffs in 2010.

EPD.jpg

The El Paso Diablos, managed by Paolo Passarello around $8.2M to spend on FA.

Starting Rotation

Roy Halladay
Aaron Laffey
Fernando Nieve
Scott Olsen
Manny Parra

Needs: The names are there, but Scott Olsen and Manny Parra struggled last year and leaves the rotation in need of an upgrade. The team needs at least 2 starters to be competitive in this tough division. They don’t have much money to spend, the positive thing is they don’t need a number 1 starter, but they need a number 2 and maybe a number 3.

Bullpen
Franscisco Rodriguez
Carlos Marmol
Ramon Ramirez
Billy Wagner
Scott Linebrink
Jesse Crain
Brian Bass
Tobi Stoner

Needs: None. He has all the relievers that he needs and could probably even afford to trade some to help out in other areas.

Catching
With Geovany Soto and Landon Powell pulling catching duties the flying moose should manage to get through the season.

Needs: Possible upgrade required here.

Infield
The Diablo’s infield is pretty good with Kevin Youkilis playing first, Chase Utley at second and Jose Bautista at third. Unfortunately, they have no shortstop.

Needs: SS, support first or third depending on how Youkilis is used, and a utility infielder.

Outfield

The outfield currently has Johnny Damon (LF), Ichiro Suzuki (CF) and Pat Burrell and Josh Willingham playing in right field.

Needs: In the outfield, he needs a 5th outfielder, especially one that can play defense in right field.

Final Assessment

El Paso needs 2 starters, maybe 3, 1 first or third basemen depending on how Youkilis is used, a shortstop, a utility fielder, and a fifth outfielder. The problem for the team is that he only has around $8M to spend, maybe that amount is not enough; however, with an abundance of relievers, he could trade one to free cap space or fill one of his needs.

cs1.jpg

The Cangrejeros of Santurce are owned by Felix Vega Fournier and have the most money, $48M, to spend in the upcoming FA period.

Starting Rotation
Brett Anderson
Brian Matusz
Wade Davis
Clayton Richard
Bud Norris/Anthony Reyes

Needs: As you can see, this rotation looks more like the 2011 rotation instead of the 2010, especially if Shaun Marcum makes a comeback from injury, so the Cangrejeros will need 2 or 3 starters to fill the spots for 2010, to be competitive on this tough division.

Bullpen
Mark Lowe
Franklin Morales
Angel Guzman
Juan Gutierrez
Kim Mickolio
Sam Gervacio
Brett Myers
Joel Peralta
Carlos Rosa
Waldis Joaquin

Needs: If Cangrejeros uses Myers as a reliever instead of starter, they could use one more lefty out of the bullpen.

Catching
With the likes of Jarrod Saltalamacchia, J. R. Towles and Francisco Cervelli you would think the Cangrejeros would be set; but…

Needs: Possible upgrade,#3 catcher required

Infield
In the infield, the team has Casey Kotchman, Kyle Blanks and Michael Aubrey covering 1st base, Luis Valbuena and Rusty Ryal doing duty at second, Gregg Dobbs and Mark Loretta platooning at third and superstar Troy Tulowitzki covering shortstop.

Needs: Santurce needs a full time third basemen. There are rumors that Joe Crede may be wearing the Santurce uniform very shortly. Additionally the team could use a versatile utility player to cover for injuries.

Outfield
The Santurce outfield is very strong with Nolan Reimold/Gerardo Parra playing in left, Brett Gardner/Gerardo Parra covering centerfield and Matt Kemp taking the starting role in right. Additionally, the team has Nick Evans, Brian Giles and Matt Joyce (as well as Kyle Blanks) to fill in for injury and/or defense should the need arise during the season.

Needs: None

Final Assessment
Santurce needs, two or three starting pitchers, a lefty reliever, one backup catcher, and a utility player. Picking up Kotchman and Crede help ensure the infield is set for the 2010 upcoming season.

spi.PNG

The Spokane Indians are owned by Lance Bousley (take the u out and he works with Charlie?????s Angels), and has around $3M dollars to spend on FA.

Starting Rotation

Mark Buehrle
Matt Garza
James Shields
Tim Hudson/Brian Duensing
Andy Sonnanstine/Eddie Bonine/Chad Gaudin

Needs: The Top 5 starters are very strong, but Lance does not have much money and needs to spend on a closer and some relievers.

Bullpen
Jay Bergman
Dirk Hayhurst
Carlos Villanueva
Joe Smith

Needs: He needs a closer, a set up reliever, a lefty and one more reliever.

Catcher
Rod Barajas

Needs: a backup catcher.

Infield

The infield, first basemen is Adam Laroche, needs a 2b, third basemen is Ryan Zimmerman and SS is Ronny Cedeno.

Needs: A 2b and a utility guy.

Outfield
LF Nate McLouth
CFGrady Sizemore
RF Ryan Raburn/Cameron Maybin/Eric Hinske

Needs: Another outfielder to fill the at bats.

Final Assessment

Spokane does not have much money and needs to spend a lot of money with relievers, a backup catcher, a second basemen, a utility player and one more outfielder. It is going to be difficult to get all these needs with only $3M dollars to spend, I see a lot of trades before its all over.

Trades

Filed under: USTT - Ultimate Strat Trash Talk! — cangrejero @ 2:52 pm

Altoona has been very busy making two trades, one with Santurce and a second one with Auburn. The first move was trading Joe Crede to Santurce for minor league centerfielder Adrian Ortiz. Altoona already have Ian Stewart for many years so Crede was expendable. For Santurce, they acquire a good defensive third basemen with power for 2 years, giving them a chance to develop Matt Dominguez and Lonnie Chisenhall both playing this year at double a.

The second trade is a little bit more complicated, it involves three players, Josh Fields and Edward Mujica moving from Auburn to Altoona in exchange for Hank Blalock. At the moment Auburn has Jim Thome and Ross Gload playing first. I believe that Blalock, who has 1 year remaining on his contract, will have a difficult time to get at bats this year in Auburn. Now, Altoona made a very interesting move because they traded their only first basemen, got a quality reliever in Mujica and open a lot of cap money trading Crede and Blalock (almost 5.5M) which tell us that they are going hard after Free Agent, Albert Pujols.

After reviewing both trades, we have to say that Altoona move some cap money for Free Agency, Santurce brings a stop gate at 3b until his 2 young third basmen are ready and Auburn has 3 first basemen, meaning, we are going to see another move by the DoubleDays in the near future.

Browns Draft Analysis 2009

Filed under: Draft — Browns Front Office @ 2:50 pm

St. Louis draft recap

St. Louis benefited from having four of the top 54 picks in this years draft, and restocked its pitching prospects. In 2007, the Browns took University of Missouri pitcher Max Scherzer, with the 16th overall pick, and he is poised to make his debut this season in St. Louis. The Browns are hoping to catch lighting in a bottle twice. They went back to Columbia this year and selected Aaron Crow with the tenth pick in the draft. The 6-3 right hander has a fastball that clocks out at around 96 mhp, a hard slider that he throws in the 87-90 mhp range, and good command of his change up. He was rated as the fifth best prospect in the USBL draft by Baseball America?????s Jim Callis, and Browns GM Jeff Behrens, also a Mizzou alum, was happy to have the former Tiger.

???We see Aaron joining a Browns rotation with Jon Lester, Ian Snell, Luke Hochevar, and Max Scherzer throwing to Matt Wieters that will make us a contender for years to come,??? Behrens said. He added that the Browns were hoping to have a bat like Brett Wallace fall to them but now may use an excess of pitching to try and acquire some more offensive prospects.

???We also feel that we have several pitchers about ready like Vin Mazzarro, Wade LeBlanc, JA Happ and Ricky Romero as well,??? Behrens said. ???We also have Jeff Suppan and Tim Wakefield, so we have some chips to go out and get some players.???

The Browns took three more pitchers, RHPs Jake Odorizzi and Jenrry Mejia with the first and 16th picks of the first round supplemental (31 and 46 overall) portion of the draft, and RHP Zeke Spruill with their second round pick. Odorizzi is another Midwesterner, from Highland, IL. The 6-2 right hander was also starting at shortstop in high school. He was considered by some experts as the top prep pitcher in the draft, but fell to St. Louis in the supplemental round because of a commitment to Louisville. His plus fastball (92-95) and potential for four solid pitches, gives him the raw material to be a frontline starter.

Mejia is from the Dominican Republic and is still very raw. His fastball hits the 96 mph range, but many believe he should be able to reach 100 mph when he develops. He has a deceptive change up that he throws in the high-80s that looks like a two-seam fastball. Like many young arms, he is very reliant on the fastball, but should develop into a late-inning relief option in the long run.

The first position player selected by the Browns was SS Harold Martinez, considered by Baseball America as the second best prep prospect prior to his senior season. He was once touted as another Alex Rodriguez, but comparisons cooled after a terrible senior season allowed his stock to slip, but he has loads of power and a cannon for an arm. He is a bit slow, so he projects as a third baseman.

The Browns took 13 pitchers with their 22 picks. St. Louis took four shortstops, including Evereth Cabrera, a switch hitting speed merchant from Nicaragua with a flashy glove who could be in the majors in 2010.

The Browns draft philosophy continues to be to stock power arms. Crow, Odorizzi, Mejia and Spruill all are hard throws, as are big bodies like 6-8, 250 lb. Tyson Bagley (6) along with Paul Demny (8), Aaron King (4) and Kyle Farrell (14).

The organization has two blue chip catchers in Wieters and Austin Romine, but also took two other catchers, Kevin Dubler and Antonio Jimenez, in the second half of the draft.

Alexi Cassilla appears poised to assume the second base job for the next decade but, with Bobby Crosby shaky, the Browns continue to search for middle infield help. Along with Martinez and Cabrera, they took SS Taylor Pastornicky (6), whose father Cliff played in the majors, and Cody Puckett (10). Pastornicky is similar to SS Andrew Romine, drafted last season, as neither have no one standout skill, but have a good sense for the game and who project at least as useable reserves, who could make the majors on the glove work alone.

USBL OWNER MINIMUM EXPECTATIONS

Filed under: League News — ervick @ 2:21 pm

ATTITUDE

“The spirit, the will to win and the will to excel-these are the things that endure and these are the qualities that are so much more important than any of the events that occasion them.”
-Vince Lombardi

Having the right attitude makes online leagues fun for everyone involved. Having the wrong attitude can ruin the league for everyone.

Members should strive to improve their team and try to put the best possible team on the field for every game. If you are not a contender you should be aiming to ruin your opponent’s chances by trying to win every game. Tanking games or the season is not acceptable in the USBL.

USBL members should attempt to be the best GM and manager for their team, to ensure realism. They should seek to acquire the best players for their roster through trade, whether it is young players to rebuild or veteran players to make a run for the playoffs.

Members should take the time to assemble a reasonable computer manager, with the best possible lineups, a logical starting rotation and basic bullpen setup. It does not matter how bad your teams is, you owe it to the league to manage your team to the best of your ability.

COMMITMENT

“Individual commitment to a group effort — that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
-Vince Lombardi

Members must maintain the focus of a long-term membership. By joining the league, you are making a commitment to be here for the long term. We understand that real life comes first and even though the intention was for long-term involvement, things change. The USBL encourages members who leave on good terms to consider reinstatement when real life issues allow.

While we are all here for fun, there is also a minimum amount of time a member must put into the league to assure their team is being run to the best of their ability.

  • Meeting league deadlines for roster moves and games played.
  • Preparing for and participating in the Auction, Unaffiliated Players Draft and Rule 5 Draft.
  • Roster management, which includes, making salary decisions, trading players and 40-man roster moves.
  • Creating monthly computer managers.

Each league member is expected to meet all deadlines, keep up with all league communications and participate in the league at a level beyond that of just playing the games.

INTEGRITY

“Winning is nice if you don’t lose your integrity in the process”
-Arnold Horshak

When playing our home games against an opponent’s computer manager, integrity and honesty are at a premium. In short, we must all trust each other and live up to that trust. If you think another member is in some way being dishonest or is intentionally not following the league rules in some way, you should alert the league commissioner.

You should make reasonable trade offers the first time, out of respect for each other. Ripping someone off hurts the entire league, as we are only as good as our weakest link.

RESPECT

“You should respect each other and refrain from disputes; you should not, like water and oil, repel each other, but should, like milk and water, mingle together.”
- Buddha

Members must treat other members with the utmost level of respect and courtesy at all times. Harassing or insulting behavior will not be tolerated.

Despite the realism the USBL tries to put into our hobby, we all must understand that it is just a hobby. We all have jobs, family and other responsibilities that can and will take our attention.
